Dr Christine Friedenreich University of Calgary Calgary, Canada

Dr Friedenreich is an Adjunct Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Community Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto (1990) and completed her first year of postdoctoral training at IARC (1990-91), at the time that the EPIC study was being launched, and three additional years at the University of Calgary (1992-94). She was the Visiting Scientist at IARC in 2004-5 working again with the EPIC Study. Dr Friedenreich was the Canadian representative on the IARC Scientific Council (2018-21) and served as the Chair of this Council (2019-2021). Her program of research is focused on the role of physical activity in cancer control spanning from prevention to survival including observational studies and randomized controlled trials. She has contributed to developing the US 2018 and WHO 2020 physical activity guidelines. Her research has been recognized by the Canadian Cancer Society with the O. Harold Warwick Prize (2013), by the US National Cancer Institute with the Rosalind E. Franklin Award for Women in Science (2022). She was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2016) and the Royal Society of Canada (2019). In 2023 and 2025, respectively, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
