Prof Sunny O ABRIKWU Professor University of Port Harcourt Nigeria

Sunny Abarikwu is a Professor at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and completed postdoctoral training at Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany (2013) and the University of Minas Gerais, Brazil (2016). For over 15 years, his research has focused on defining the mechanisms that control inflammation of the male gonads by environmental active chemicals and oxidative/antioxidant system in the male gonads, and how alterations in these processes lead to gonadal diseases such as spermatogenesis impairment and inflammation-related male infertility. He is an alumnus of the Nigerian Young Academy, Fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Programme, South Africa, USERN Ambassador for Nigeria, and was invited by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2025 to serve as an expert contributor for the development of   Monograph Volume 140, carcinogenicity of atrazine, alachlor, and vinclozolin. Prof Abarikwu is on the editorial board for several prestigious journals, including Andrologia and Journal of Toxicology (John-Wiley). He was listed by Web of Science as one of the top 500 scholarly authors in Nigeria between 2019 and 2021. Many of his articles are indexed in Science Citation Index, featuring notable work on triazine-mediated gonadal inflammation, oxidative stress, and therapeutic intervention strategies utilizing plant-based bioactives. His research has received funding from prominent agencies such as the German Research Foundation, The Academy of Science for the Developing World (TWAS), UNESCO, and TETFUND (Nigeria). Currently, his work focuses on inflammation-mediated spermatogenesis impairment, developing bioactive male contraceptives from fluted pumpkin seeds, treatment of male gonadal side-effects of chemotherapy, and studying human health effects of environmental chemicals.
