Carolina Espina, PhD/MPH

Dr Carolina Espina is a Staff Scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO). With more than 15 years of experience in cancer prevention research and public health, she leads the “World Code Against Cancer Framework”, an initiative to develop regional Codes Against Cancer to advance prevention and health promotion globally. This work includes the European Code Against Cancer 4th and 5th editions, the Latin American and Caribbean Code Against Cancer1st edition, and further regional initiatives under development. These tools serve educational and advocacy purposes and are grounded in interdisciplinary approaches integrating epidemiology, behavioural science, health promotion, health literacy, implementation research, systems thinking, and health policy analysis. She also contributes to major international projects, including the Horizon Europe consortium 4P-CAN, is involved a variety of projects on implementation research in Latin America and Europe, and has developed comprehensive e-learning programmes and knowledge translation strategies to support cancer prevention globally. Before joining IARC, she worked at the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization. She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology of cancer, and a Master’s degree in Public Health.
