This abstract is presented on behalf of IARC Handbooks team's scientists since Vol. 15 and of all Working Group members of the Handbooks published so far.

Background
The IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention Programme is one of the 10 flagship Programmes of the Agency. Since its inception in 1995, the Programme complement the IARC Monographs programme, by providing comprehensive reviews and consensus evaluations of the effectiveness of interventions or strategies to reduce cancer incidence or mortality.
Methods
IARC’s process for developing Handbooks engages independent, interdisciplinary Working Groups of international scientific experts who perform a transparent synthesis of the available evidence, which is then translated into evaluations according to set criteria. The IARC Handbooks cover primary and secondary prevention interventions.
Results
In recent volumes, we have reviewed and evaluated the effectiveness of screening for cancers of the breast, colon, cervix and oral cavity and are preparing a Handbook on lung cancer screening. Topics of primary prevention have included absence of excess body fatness, smokeless tobacco cessation, alcohol reduction or cessation, alcohol policies.
Each topic has brought forward different specific characteristics and challenges in the evaluation of the evidence. In this presentation I will offer an overview of the similarities and differences between these volumes, showing how the outcomes are specific to each cancer in terms of what was evaluated and the additional information provided.
Conclusion
The outcomes of the IARC Handbooks are widely used by national and international health agencies to implement evidence-based interventions or develop policy recommendations to reduce cancer risk at the population level.
