Background: International HPV Awareness Day (IHAD), initiated by the International Papillomavirus Society, is a global campaign held annually on March 4th. Since 2018, China has participated for eight consecutive years, gradually expanding from developed regions to central, western, and low-resource areas.
Objectives: To assess efficacy of the 2025 IHAD campaign and its impact on the public awareness levels regarding HPV in China.
Methods: The 2025 IHAD, led by Peking Union Medical College, featured a central venue in Beijing and coordinated outreach via 40 sub-venues in 24 cities and 16 low-resource counties, combining livestreamed expert sessions with localized education efforts. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in five low-health-resource counties among women attending cervical screening services over a two-week period spanning the campaign day. The survey assessed knowledge of HPV vaccination and screening to describe awareness levels in these settings.
Results: Twelve national experts delivered evidence-based lectures on HPV, vaccination, screening, and cervical cancer elimination goals, livestreamed nationwide. Sub-venues conducted diverse public education activities, including free screenings, health booths, outdoor campaigns, and online sessions, with a focus on underserved regions. In total, 7,100 individuals participated in offline events, 48,582 joined online, and media exposure surpassed 1.5 million views. In the five study counties, 1,839 women received cervical cancer screening during the two-week period surrounding the IHAD. Among them, 88.7% were aware of HPV screening and 68.9% were aware of HPV vaccination.
Conclusions: The 2025 IHAD campaign in China achieved broad geographic and population coverage, engaging both urban and rural communities nationwide. Measurable improvements in HPV-related awareness in low-resource areas were observed, support the value of this community-based health promotion in enhancing public understanding of HPV-related knowledge.
