Incidence of Adolescents and Young Adults cancer in Annaba - Algeria

Background
Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) (aged 15-39 years old) with cancer are a vulnerable population, although this group is understudied in Algeria.
Objective :
Draw up the epidemiologic profile of cancer in AYAs group in Annaba between 2004 and 2021.
Methods:
Data of Annaba Cancer Registry (ACR) were used .
All parameters definitions of ACR and registration methods were common to all IARC-supported cancer registries.
The proportion of AYA age group in Annaba population in 2012 (middle period ) was 52,7%
Only invasive new cases occured among AYAs group aged between 15 and 39 years , during the period 2004 -2021 were studied . Population based cancer incidence for AYAs in Annaba, was analyzed by sex and age group (15-19, 20-29, 30-39) . The overall number of cancers all ages, was 15 676 cases.
Results:
Cancer AYAs group represents 12.0% of all new cancer cases.
Women are more likely to be involved with a sex-ratio ( female/male) 2.2
The most common cancers in both sex combined were : breast (31.5%), thyroide (12.2%), lymphoma (11.1%) and colorectal (8.3%).
Some types of cancers were more common in males, whereas other cancers are more common in females.
In males, the most common cancers were : lymphoma (18.4%) , colorectal (13.1%) and nasopharynx (9.8%).
In Females , the most common cancers were : breast (44.1%), thyroide (14.6%) and lymphoma (7.2%).
The incidence of specific cancer types varies according to age.
The most common cancer types in 15-19 years age-group (124 cases) were : lymphoma , soft tissu and bone sarcoma, leukemia and nasopharynx.
For 20-29 years age-group (466 cases), the most cancer types were ; thyroid , lymphoma and breast .
For cases aging 30 to 39 years old (1299), the most common types were ; breast, thyroid and colorectum
Conclusion :
This population is understudied in Algeria and needs more investgations for better management cares .
