Dr Salvatore VACCARELLA IARC lyon, France

My research focuses on cancer epidemiology, with particular interest in cancer inequalities and in the co-occurrence of underuse and overuse across the cancer care continuum. Despite substantial socioeconomic and gender inequalities in cancer outcomes within and between countries, and persistent underuse of effective care among disadvantaged populations, increasing financial and human resources are allocated to medical interventions that provide limited benefit or may cause harm, including overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The magnitude and consequences of both underuse and overuse are considerable, shaping the current epidemiological landscape of cancer, causing physical, psychological, and social harm to millions of individuals, and posing serious challenges to the sustainability of health systems. Over recent years, I have developed a research programme aimed at understanding and reducing this imbalance, with a strong emphasis on the development of biostatistical and epidemiological approaches to identify and quantify these phenomena, ultimately to inform public health policy and practice.

I am the coordinator of the Cancer Inequalities Team at IARC.
